"Bin Laden will send a video message on 9/11 anniversary."
That was the headline that caught my eye as I was sitting at my desk, reading over the speech John Edwards will
deliver today.
It's unbelievable. Six years after 9/11, we have to ask ourselves—why is Bin Laden still out there?

I hope you get a chance to watch or read this important speech.

John is going to help rebuild New Orleans—and he wants you to join him.
Soon, John will be taking a break from the campaign trail to work in an area of New Orleans devastated by Hurricane
Katrina. He'll need some help—so we're going to send five supporters like you with him.
We are going to select five supporters to join John in New Orleans. And if you make a contribution by the end of the
third quarter on Sunday, September 30, one of them could be you!
johnedwards.com/build
This campaign is about real change—about rolling up our sleeves and working together to build One America. And there
is no better way to work towards that goal than by dedicating some time and energy to rebuilding areas of New Orleans
still struggling to recover from Katrina.
Help John rebuild New Orleans with a contribution today. By giving between now and the end of the quarter on Sunday,
September 30, you—and four other supporters—could have the opportunity to work alongside John.
johnedwards.com/build
Working hard to create real change—those are our values, not Washington values. The system in Washington is rigged
to serve special interests and big corporations—and ignore hard-working people struggling to get by.
Nowhere is that more apparent than in the Bush administration's disastrous handling of Hurricane Katrina and its
aftermath—and in the fact that two years later, they continue to ignore the needs of the hard-working people there still
struggling to rebuild.
Rebuilding New Orleans is one of the most critical challenges we face today—and it's a challenge John cares deeply
about. John led over 700 college students on an alternative spring break to help rebuild a New Orleans neighborhood in
2006. He announced his candidacy there in January. He's returned numerous times since then to meet with people who
are struggling to rebuild their lives, and to raise awareness of the sad state of recovery efforts and the continued
incompetence of the Bush administration.
This campaign is about creating big, bold change on the issues that matter—so we're not offering you gimmicks. We're
not offering you a fancy dinner. And we're not offering you the chance to hobnob with celebrities and former presidents.
We are offering you the chance to roll up your sleeves and make a difference—to help move us a little closer to creating
One America for all of us.
We'll pay to get you there. All you need is your two hands and a desire to make the world around you a better place. If
you make a contribution by Sunday, September 30, you could be joining John in making that happen.

And together, we can create the change we need to see in this country.
Sincerely,
--David Bonior

Tonight, after President Bush makes yet another argument for continuing the war in Iraq, John Edwards will speak
directly to the American people in a nationwide address on MSNBC.
Our campaign has bought airtime on MSNBC immediately following the President's address at 9 p.m., and John Edwards
will challenge the President's remarks with a strong call to the nation to end the war now.
Please watch in that timeframe—and forward this e-mail to your friends, asking them to watch as well. Each of us has a
responsibility to make sure that President Bush and Congress understand that the time for excuses has run out. John
Edwards will deliver a strong message tonight on our behalf. It's time to end this war and bring our troops home.
Buying this kind of airtime is expensive. But we believe that President Bush's address must be countered with a strong
voice in opposition to the failed policies that have kept our troops in harm's way for far too long. Tonight, John Edwards
will continue to lead, and make the case to the nation that we cannot wait for an election to change course in Iraq—we
as citizens must make Washington understand that the time to end this war is now.
Don't miss John's address tonight on MSNBC, immediately following the President.
President Bush will be on every network for free tonight. Our campaign will have to pay for the time on MSNBC so that
John Edwards can challenge the President's failed policies. Please consider making a contribution to the campaign—to
help us meet the costs of paying for tonight's address—and to help John's campaign continue to grow.

Thanks,
The John Edwards Team
Thank you for writing John Edwards about the situation in Iraq. He appreciates that you took the time to share your
thoughts and concerns with him. He enjoys hearing from people all over the country about the
issues that are important to them.
John Edwards believes the most important responsibility of the next President is to restore America's moral leadership in
the world, starting in Iraq. America's leadership role in the world has grown out of our compassion and moral strength.
We can be proud of our long history of using our strength to fight for the freedom of others, but our standing in the
world has been badly tarnished. America can once again be looked up to and respected around the world, and we should
begin with Iraq.
The only solution to the situation in Iraq is a political solution -- the Iraqi people must take responsibility for their
country. The first step toward this goal is the immediate withdrawal of 40,000 to 50,000
troops from Iraq, with the complete withdrawal of all combat troops from Iraq in about a year. This will allow the Iraqis to
assume greater responsibility for calming the sectarian violence and domestic strife while establishing a common rule of
law and governance.
When the drawdown from Iraq begins, we should do the opposite of what the Administration did in Iraq, and prepare for
the worst while working for the best. Managing the regional situation after withdrawal will require a stepped-up American
diplomatic presence in the region. In the coming months and years, we must employ more creative diplomacy and
build more partnerships and more friends.
After withdrawal, we should keep sufficient forces in the region to contain the conflict and ensure that instability in Iraq
does not spill over into other countries. We must guard against a regional war, a terrorist haven, and genocide. We
must also intensify efforts to train the Iraqi security forces.
Finally, the U.S. should engage in direct talks with all the nations in the region, including Iran and Syria, in order to
unite them in a regional political solution to the sectarian violence inside Iraq.
John Edwards opposes President Bush's misguided escalation of the war, which puts more American lives at risk and
sends exactly the wrong signal to the Iraqis. Our brave men and women in the military have served honorably, and it is
time to start bringing them home.
Your comments on the situation in Iraq are very important to us, and we
appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you for writing John Edwards about the important issue of Social Security. We appreciate that you took the time
to share your thoughts and concerns with us. We enjoy hearing from people all over the country about the issues that
are important to them.
We have Two Americas in our country - one for those on the top and one for everyone else. We can build One America,
but it's not going to be easy. It's going to take all of us together because the people with power aren't going to give it
up without a fight. As president, John Edwards will stand up to powerful interests and fight everyday to build One
America.
Social Security has been one of the most successful government programs in history. Launched by President Franklin D.
Roosevelt in 1935 during the Great Depression, Social Security was originally envisioned as a trust fund for retirees.
Today, 13 million senior citizens annually are lifted out of poverty thanks to Social Security.
We are committed to protecting retirement benefits for working Americans. John Edwards strongly opposes efforts to
privatize Social Security, which would jeopardize benefits by risking individuals' Social Security funds in the stock market
and lead to a reduction in guaranteed benefits.
Social Security is a promise among generations. John Edwards believes we must keep that promise. We need a
national retirement program that we can trust. Our elderly population deserves a sufficient income to live with dignity
into their retirement. As president, John Edwards will oppose raising the retirement age, reducing benefits or diverting
funds to private accounts. John Edwards will stand with people who have worked with dignity without having to depend on
their children to support them.
Ultimately, to deal with Social Security, we must take the problem out of the realm of politics. We cannot solve Social
Security without a package of reforms that earns the support of both Democrats and Republicans. Like the Greenspan
commission appointed in 1981 - when the trust fund had only two years left - any solution must be non-ideological,
strongly bipartisan, and committed to the goals of ensuring that every American can retire with dignity and extending the
life of the Trust Fund.
Thank you for writing John Edwards about health care. He appreciates that you took the time to share your thoughts
and concerns. Hearing from people all over the country about the issues important to them strengthens our campaign.
Today, there are 45 million Americans who lack health insurance. Many uninsured people don't get the care they need,
and nearly 18,000 die every year as a result. Meanwhile, American families with insurance are struggling to keep up
with insurance premiums that have grown faster than wages for almost 50 years. To fix this crisis John Edwards believes
we need a fundamental change in our health care system to provide truly universal coverage - not mere access to
insurance -- and get better quality care at lower cost.
John Edwards has a specific plan to transform America's health care system and guarantee universal health care for
every man, woman and child in America. Under his plan, businesses will either cover their employees or help pay for
their insurance. The government will make insurance affordable through new tax credits and by leading the way
toward more cost-effective care. New "Health Care Markets" will give families and businesses a choice of quality plans,
including one public plan based on Medicare. Finally, once these steps have been taken, all American residents will be
required to take responsibility and get insurance.
America spends more per person on health care than anywhere else in the world, but the results of all that spending are
often disappointing. Avoidable complications from chronic disease and a lack of preventive care, wasteful administrative
costs and inconsistent quality are the three biggest drivers of health care costs. John Edwards has proposed steps to
address these problems that will save an average family $2,000 to $2,500 a year and eliminate at least $130 billion a
year in wasteful health care spending. Overall, better, more consistent quality could save 100,000 to 150,000 lives and
$50 billion to $100 billion a year. Edwards will require health care providers to use information technology that protects
privacy, bring the private sector together to establish standards, and provide targeted help with implementation.
